Backmark by Griffing in Jersey City. Enlisted on 3/17/1863 as a Private. On 3/17/1863 he mustered into US Army 5th LA Batty E (date and method of discharge not given)(Subsequent service in US Army) Promotions:* Corpl * Sergt * 1st Sergt * 2nd Lieut 5/8/1866  (Awarded Medal of Honor for actions against Indians at Clearwater, Idaho 07/11/1877)

Citation:  Voluntarily and successfully conducted, in the face of a withering fire, a party which recovered possession of an abandoned howitzer and 2 Gatling guns Iying between the lines a few yards from the Indians.
